When you start planning your wedding, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. In amongst the million different things you could do and the well-meaning advice that’s sure to start flying your way, it’s hard to know what to do. Probably the best piece of wedding planning advice I can give you is to ignore all the noise and just do you! The most important thing is staying true to your relationship and to your personalities – there really are no actual ‘must-haves’ when it comes to getting married.

Need some inspiration? Then keep reading! Mary & Dustin stayed true to themselves throughout the wedding planning process, and it really shone through on their beautiful day at Flagstaff’s very own The Gardens at Viola’s.

Mary & Dustin: How to Truly Enjoy Your Wedding

Mary & Dustin’s wedding was packed full of personality, in the most wonderful way possible. They ignored the rules they didn’t care for and added elements that you might not expect. Perhaps because of this they were able to truly enjoy their wedding day.

Dustin used to be part of a metal band that was famous in my hometown called the Hour of The Wolf, and some of his old bandmates were groomsmen. Of course, everyone expected there would be some metal music somewhere in their day, but I’m not sure anyone expected it to be for the mother-son dance! Dustin & his Mom headbanged together instead of swaying side to side, and had a genuine, wonderful time dancing together.

Meanwhile, Mary wasn’t one for a big white dress, so she opted for a gorgeous, totally unique purple wedding gown instead. She did her own hair and makeup, and looked absolutely beautiful.

By including elements unique to them, and true to their personalities, Mary & Dustin were able to celebrate their wedding in a way that felt really special and unique. Plus, I think they both felt more like themselves with purple dresses and metal music. If you’re planning a wedding, don’t be afraid to scrap tradition or so-called ‘must-haves’ for an option that’s more ‘you’. After all, it’s your day!

The Gardens at Viola’s in Flagstaff: Unique Wedding Venue

Of course, creating a wedding that is true to you is a whole lot easier when you find the right venue. Mary & Dustin chose to have their wedding at one of my favorite Flagstaff Wedding Venues, the Gardens at Viola’s. This venue has beautiful gardens and outdoor areas that make for a stunning backdrop at any time of year. The gardens were particularly beautiful for Mary & Dustin’s Summer wedding.

I couldn’t write about a wedding at the Gardens at Viola’s without mentioning Jessie, one of the most amazing wedding day coordinators. Creating a unique wedding is certainly a lot easier when there’s a brilliant coordinator who’s ready to help you turn your ideas into reality, and that’s exactly what Jessie will do. If you’re looking for a unique wedding venue in Flagstaff, I’d definitely recommend checking out the Gardens at Viola’s.

Unique Flagstaff Wedding Photography

Of course, the combination of a purple wedding dress, metal music and other beautiful elements of Mary & Dustin’s day also made for some wonderfully Unique Flagstaff Wedding Photography. I had so much fun capturing their day! Mary & Dustin chose Whipstone Farms to provide their beautiful, unique wedding flowers, and a fantastic DJ, 7000 ft of Sound, so everyone was sure to get up and dance. Probably one of the most special elements of their day to photograph though was the way they included their two daughters.

Mary & Dustin’s ceremony included a handfasting ritual, a champagne toast, and they jumped over a broomstick at the end of the aisle with their two daughters – all wedding details true to them that made for beautiful, Unique Flagstaff Wedding Photography. They also included their daughters in the ring exchange as well as their first dance, which was beautiful to witness.

I have to say, I’m loving this trend of couple’s planning unique weddings that are true to their characters, and if you’re planning your own wedding, hopefully Mary & Dustin can inspire you. It shone through on their day that they were genuinely having fun and enjoying themselves, and I think that’s something we should all be aiming for. Weddings shouldn’t be about stress or checking off every item on a to do list, but about celebrating your unique love in a way that fills you with joy.
